Humans of Gondwana
A group of young enthusiasts in Central India, who met as co-workers at a grassroots organization in Chhattisgarh, were inspired by Humans of New York to collectively narrate stories from the tribal heartlands. Their access to the remotest villages, the adivasi community and understanding of the pressing issues surrounding this community, pushed them to give a name and shape to these stories- Humans of Gondwana, a photo project capturing the Adivasis of Chhattisgarh, built on the premise of eradicating misconceptions centered around the Adivasi community. The project that started with the aim to bring every day struggles and triumphs of Adivasis to the fore, now tells the stories of conflict, displacement, atrocities, farming, environment, and advocates the dying culture, traditional practices, food and language, that we think represent the ‘Adivasi philosophy for life and living’.

Broom Making

“इतना कुछ नही है इसमें इसको ऐसेही बनाया, आपके लिए भी बना सकता हु, बस एक पुराना तेल का डिब्बा और रबड़ की चप्पल चाहिए | मैंने तेल डब्बे को छेद कर चप्पल के गोल टुकड़े काटकर उनको डब्बे में फंसा दिया और मेरी गाड़ी बन गई | पर अभी ये ठीक नहीं चल रही इसके चक्कों को थोडा सा और काटकर गोल बनाना पड़ेगा तब और अच्छा चलेगी |”

22 kms to school
“हम रोज़ 6 किलोमीटर चल कर स्कूल आते हैं | कभी कीचड़ होता है, कभी पानी गिरता है पर हम रोज़ आते हैं | मास्टर जी का गाँव बहुत दूर है, वो कभी – कभी आ नहीं पाते हैं | अभी तो हम छोटी कक्षा में हैं, आगे पढने के लिए और दूर जाना पड़ेगा, नवरंगपुर में, वो 22 किलोमीटर हैं | लड़की लोग तो छोड़ देती है पढाई |”
“We walk 6 kms to school everyday. It rains and becomes muddy sometimes but we never stopped walking. Our teacher’s village is far away and he doesn’t come often. Right now we are in Primary class, for High School we need to go much further away than this, 22 Kilometres to Navrangpur. Rat Catcher
“मैं ये चूहा पकड़ने के लिए बना रहा हूँ । अभी खेत में धान काटे हैं, तो बहुत चूहा हो गया है । तो इसमें धान रखके इसको दुसरे बांस के टुकड़े से फसा के रखते हैं, और इसके ऊपर पत्थर टिका देते हैं। जब चूहा धान खाने आता है, और इसके ऊपर पैर रखता है तो पत्थर गिर जाता है । कल मैंने 8 जगह लगाया था, 3 में चूहा मिला है ।”
“This is a Rat catcher. We have just harvested our crop and the menace of rats has already begun. I put some grains in it and arrange pieces of bamboo for a string. A stone is placed on it to hit the rat. When the rat slowly comes over it to eat grains, the stone falls and the rat is dead immediately. “मेरे घर में माँ, पिताजी, भाई, भाभी, दीदी और मैं रहते हैं | मेरे घर में मैं अकेली हूँ जो स्कूल जा रही हूँ | मुझे पहले कोई भी स्कूल नहीं गया है | पर घर में सभी मुझे पढने में मदद करते हैं | मैं सुबह 4 बजे उठती हूँ, तैयार होती हूँ फिर भैया मुझे जंगल पार करता है , मैं फिर दोस्तों के साथ आश्रम जाती हूँ | वहां से वापस 10 बजे आके स्कूल जाती हूँ | 4 बजे घर वापस आती हूँ खाना खा के फिर से आश्रम जाती हूँ | वापस आते में रात हो जाती है तो भैया लेने आता है मुझे | कभी मैं स्कूल नहीं जाती हूँ या छुट्टी होने से घर में माँ की मदद करती हूँ | पानी भरने में, बकरी चराने में, झाड़ू बनाने में | अभी मैं और आगे भी पढाई करुँगी |”
“I live with my parents, my brother, my sister – in law and my grandmother. I am the first person in my family to get the opportunity to attend school. No one in my family has had the privilege to obtain an education. Everyone in my family helps me with my schoolwork. I wake up at 4 am every morning and get ready to go to school. My brother helps me cross the woods, a 6 km walk where I meet up with friends. My friends and I go for Tuition. After our tution we return home and then go to our regular school. Our school starts at 10 am and runs until 4pm. After school, I promptly return home, eat and again go for tution. My classes run late until dusk so my brother picks me up from the edge of the woods to take me home. If there’s a day that I am not in school, I help my mother at home with household chores such as sweeping, fetching water and taking the goats out to graze. “I am making tiny balls of earth to use for hunting. These balls need to be of moderate size to get the target when used with a slingshot. I’ll dry these and go to the jungle with my friends. I caught a bird the other day, if I am lucky enough I’ll make soup for you today.”
